Advice To My Younger Self about Letting Go

If I could warn my younger self about something what would it be?

I have continuously prided myself on the fact that I love long and hard. I don't let go easily. For many years I only thought of this in a positive light as though it was a good thing.

I have the ability to endure hardship as a good soldier. And in many situations that ability has served me well. I honestly can handle more than many people would ever consider acceptable.

I know that commitments are important and loving another is not without it’s difficulties. It’s great to stay with the one you love and continue to work through situations. This is preferred, when possible.

However, if allowed to reevaluate this mindset of “love long and hard and don’t let go”, I would speak different words to my younger self.

Advice I would give to my younger self:

  • I would let myself know that it's ok to walk away and not feel guilty about it.

  • It's important to love yourself so much that you will not accept physical, mental, or emotional abuse as though you deserve to be punished.

  • Forgive and forgive and forgive.

  • I would also say, don't hold on when it's time to let go.

  • Don't let go just because your feelings were hurt, or you didn't get your way or some other simple situation.

  • Don't hold on to bitterness, anger, and hurts while clinging to a dead relationship. Let all those negative feelings go and let go of the dead relationship if you've tried and it can't be revived.

  • I would say to my younger self that I do not know how long is too long, or too short, or when too much is enough. Each person has to evaluate that for themselves.

  • As a child of God, He loves you and will love you even if you mess up over and over.

  • Go easy on yourself.

  • I would say to my younger self, maintain your relationship with your heavenly Father and let Him be your guide. Let the Holy Spirit lead you. He won't lead you wrong.
